Getting from Manado to Bunaken means a boat crossing, either the afternoon public boat that lands at the village or a transfer arranged by your accommodation. Indonesia's tourism ministry site says around 40 minutes, and other sources differ. Harbour names and departure times conflict as well, so confirm locally before you hang a connection on any of them.

How long is the boat from Manado to Bunaken?

Published times differ widely, and they do not describe the same boat or the same sea. Read each one with its source and do not average them.

How long is the boat from Manado to Bunaken?
SourceBoat describedTime stated
Tourism ministry siteBoat from ManadoAround 40 minutes
Park booking portalMotorboatAbout 60 minutes to Bunaken; about 90 to Mantehage or Manado Tua
WikivoyageBoat from Manado30 to 60 minutes
Sulawesi.comPublic crossingForty minutes in flat water, ninety otherwise
Sulawesi.comResort speedboat25 to 35 minutes

Sulawesi.com, a travel publisher that also sells tours, is the most useful of these because it separates flat water from everything else. Its figures suggest that sea state moves the crossing time more than the distance does. For planning, assume the slower figure on any day with a connection behind it.

The sources on this page give the crossing from Manado to Bunaken Island in minutes and not in kilometres, and the time is the number you can use.

Where does the public boat leave from?

Each source uses a different name.

  • Kalimas harbour, behind the Celebes Hotel: the name given by Wikivoyage, in information dated June 2024.
  • Pasar Bersehati, the fish-market jetty: the name given by Sulawesi.com.
  • Pelabuhan Bersehati: the name given by Panorama Dive Resort, on a page that looks dated.
  • Jengki: a further name for the departure point, not explained in the sources on this page, so ask locally whether it is still in use.
  • Molas, Kalasey and Tasik Ria: places the tourism ministry site says boats also run from.

Pasar Bersehati and Pelabuhan Bersehati may well be one place, and how Kalimas and Jengki relate to it is a question for local people. The safe course is to ask your Manado hotel or your Bunaken homestay the day before which jetty is in use, and to give the driver that name along with "boat to Bunaken". If your first night is in the village, our page on Bunaken homestays covers what to expect there.

Where the boat lands matters as much as where it leaves. Sulawesi.com says it carries cargo, has hardwood benches and lands at Bunaken village, not at resorts. Going back, Wikivoyage says it leaves from the village jetty or the beach by the church, depending on the tide.

When do the boats run?

There is no timetable you could hold anyone to. Set side by side, they agree on a broad pattern and disagree on the details.

When do the boats run?
SourceHow oftenLeaves ManadoLeaves Bunaken
Tourism ministry siteDaily, depending on tideAround 2 pmAbout 7 to 8 am
Wikivoyage (June 2024)Four boats, daily except Sundays, often delayedAround 14:00 to 15:00About 08:30 to 09:30
Sulawesi.comNot statedAfternoonAround 08:00 next morning
Panorama Dive Resort (page looks dated)One boat a day, except SundaysMid-afternoonAbout 8.30 am

The agreement is the useful part: out in the afternoon, back the next morning. That rhythm rules out a same-day return on the public boat, which is why a Bunaken day trip usually relies on a charter or an organised tour.

The disagreements need a decision from you. Wikivoyage counts four boats and Panorama Dive Resort one. The ministry site says daily, while Wikivoyage and Panorama Dive Resort both say not on Sundays, so plan as if there is no Sunday boat until someone at the jetty tells you otherwise. No scheduled ferry is described; the public boat is the nearest thing. Sulawesi.com's overnight pattern of an afternoon boat out, a morning dive and an evening flight home sits awkwardly with its own 08:00 return. Check how that would work before you build on it.

Which crossing option suits your trip?

Four options appear in the sources. Published fares for them are collected in the price table on this page, each with its source and date.

Which crossing option suits your trip?
OptionWho describes itTimingPoints to weigh
Public boatTourism ministry site, Wikivoyage, Sulawesi.comAfternoon out, morning backLands at the village; shared with cargo; delays reported
Marina morning speedboatSulawesi.com onlyMorningA single source calls it a less publicised middle option, known to Manado guesthouses
Resort transferWikivoyage, Sulawesi.comPick-up around 09:00 to 10:00, return around 15:00Faster boat; arranged for guests of that resort
Private charterWikivoyage, tourism ministry siteMorning out, late afternoon backUsually reserved for agent or hotel packages, per the ministry site

How does a resort transfer differ?

Three things change: the hour, the boat and the landing. Wikivoyage says most resorts arrange airport transfers for their guests, and Sulawesi.com says they typically pick up around 09:00 to 10:00 and return around 15:00. So a morning arrival fits the resort clock while a late-afternoon arrival may not. Ask your resort for its cut-off time and for what happens if your flight is late. Bunaken Oasis says its accommodation includes return transfers from Manado, but that is one operator's terms, so check each property's rate before assuming the same. The page on where to stay on Bunaken sets out the kinds of property.

Sulawesi.com argues that the public boat uses up half a day each way, so a three-day trip may justify a resort transfer. On a short trip, you are buying back a morning of Bunaken diving or Bunaken snorkeling, as well as comfort. On a longer, unhurried stay in the village, the public boat costs you far less in lost time.

For a private boat, Wikivoyage mentions charter at Manado harbour and alternatives from Tongkaina or Bahowo. Agree the return time and what happens in poor weather before you leave the shore.

How do you get from the airport to the harbour?

Bunaken has no airport of its own in any of these accounts. Arrivals use Sam Ratulangi International (MDC), 13 km north-east of Manado by Wikipedia's figure. Wikivoyage's Manado page says a taxi to the city centre takes about 30 minutes, and Sulawesi.com says about forty minutes to the fish-market jetty. It also says Grab and Gojek both operate in Manado.

For a door-to-door figure, Siladen Resort says the transfer from the airport to its own resort takes about 90 minutes, depending on weather and tide. That is its route only, but it is a realistic reminder that road, jetty and sea add up. If your flight lands after the afternoon public boat has gone, the realistic options are a night in Manado or a transfer you have arranged in advance. Our page on flights to Manado covers the routes.

What happens in rough weather?

Boats wait or do not go. Sulawesi.com warns that the afternoon public boat is most likely to be cancelled or delayed in the November to March monsoon, and that a two-day delay is possible in January or February. One publisher's warning is not a statistic, but the consequence is serious enough to plan around. In those months, keep a spare night in Manado between Bunaken and any international departure, and do not rely on a single boat to reach your flight. Our best time to visit Bunaken page compares the season claims.

What should you sort out before you board?

  • Your landing point. If you take the public boat to the village and your room is elsewhere, ask how the last stretch works. Wikivoyage says ojeks serve the island and that many paths are impassable after rain.
  • Cash. Carry it across with you, and read why in our guide to staying on the island.
  • The park ticket. The park booking portal offers online ordering and names Mainland Gate, Pantai Liang and Dermaga Baru-Bunaken Timur as places to buy a ticket for Bunaken National Park. Our Bunaken entrance fee page explains the charge.
  • Your bags. On a boat that also carries cargo, keep documents and electronics in a dry bag and within reach.

What else do people ask about the Bunaken crossing?

How do you get to Bunaken Island?

Fly to Sam Ratulangi International in Manado, travel to a jetty in the city, then cross by boat. The choices are the public boat, a resort transfer, a private charter, or a morning speedboat from the Marina that only Sulawesi.com describes.

How far is Bunaken from Manado?

Our sources give time and not distance. Indonesia's tourism ministry site says around 40 minutes by boat, the park booking portal says about 60 minutes by motorboat, and Wikivoyage says 30 to 60 minutes.

Where do you get the boat to Bunaken?

Sources name different places. Wikivoyage says Kalimas harbour behind the Celebes Hotel, while Sulawesi.com says Pasar Bersehati, the fish-market jetty. Ask your hotel or homestay the day before which jetty is in use.

How long is it from Manado airport to Bunaken?

Our sources give no single figure for the public route. Siladen Resort says about 90 minutes from the airport to its own resort, depending on weather and tide. Using public boat times, allow much longer and expect a wait at the jetty.

Do public boats to Bunaken run on Sundays?

Sources conflict. The tourism ministry site says boats leave daily, while Wikivoyage and Panorama Dive Resort both say not on Sundays. Plan as if there is no Sunday boat unless someone local confirms one.

Can you charter a private boat to Bunaken?

Wikivoyage mentions charter at Manado harbour and from Tongkaina or Bahowo. The tourism ministry site says charter boats leave in the morning, return in late afternoon and are usually reserved for agent or hotel packages.

Which prices are published?

Official fees and public third-party listings, each with its source and date. These are not our prices or offers. Fees and fares change, and sources sometimes disagree, so check the source before you rely on a figure.
