A Bunaken homestay is the island's most basic stay: a room in Bunaken village, typically with a shared bathroom and local food, according to The Indonesia Guide. The afternoon public boat from Manado lands at the village. Bring cash and plan for bottled water, and confirm any listing directly because details go out of date quickly.

What is a Bunaken homestay like?
Simple, and close to village life. The Indonesia Guide describes Bunaken village homestays as the most basic option on the island, typically with shared bathrooms and local food. That one sentence is most of what you need to decide. If a shared bathroom and whatever the household is cooking sound fine, a homestay can work well. If you want air conditioning, a dive centre on the sand and a set menu, you are looking at a different product.
The published detail stops there, and that gap is the main thing to plan around. Room type, fan or air conditioning, hot water, and whether meals are included all vary by house and can change. So ask each of those questions before you commit. Small village stays can change quickly, so treat any online description as a starting point.
Where are the homestays?
Mainly in Bunaken village. Sulawesi.com, a travel publisher that also sells tours, names Lorenso and Daniel's among the village homestays, and says the public boat lands at the village rather than at resorts. That makes the village the natural base for anyone arriving without a transfer. Panorama Backpackers also advertises rooms at the island's budget end, and its starting rate appears in the price table on this page. These names are examples, not recommendations, and any of them may have changed.
Liang beach is a different question. The sources on this page list no homestays there, so ask before you assume one exists. Our Liang beach guide covers the area, and our where to stay guide covers the full range from guesthouse to resort.
The village has a draw of its own. Wikivoyage says the main village has a sandy beach and that snorkelling is strong in front of many resorts, especially the village. If that is why you came, ask your host how far the house is from the water, and read our snorkelling page before you swim.
Distances on the island matter more than a map suggests. Wikivoyage says pathways connect the settlements, that many are impassable after rain, and that ojeks (motorbike taxis) serve the island. Ask your host how you would get to the jetty, and to any dive shop, if the path is flooded.
How do you get there on the public boat?
By the afternoon boat from Manado, returning the next morning. That much is common ground, and our Manado to Bunaken page sets out where accounts differ on jetties, times and Sunday service. Ask your host which jetty to use and confirm it on the day.
Three planning points follow.
- The rhythm decides your stay. A boat out in the afternoon and back the next morning means one night gives you no full day on the island. Two nights give you one.
- Sundays are the trap. Sunday service is disputed, so do not plan a Sunday crossing on this boat without checking locally.
- The wet months add risk. Sulawesi.com ties disruption to the November to March monsoon, so leave a spare night in Manado before an international flight.
There is no fixed timetable to rely on, and the fare is also a report rather than a published rate; it is listed with its date in the price table. Other ways across, including charters and resort transfers, are on the same Manado to Bunaken page.
What should you bring?
- Cash and a plan for drinking water. Bring what you need from Manado, including the park fee, and ask your host what water is provided. Our where to stay guide explains the island's position on both.
- Footwear for wet paths. After rain, sandals with grip will serve you better than flip-flops.
- A torch. The Slow Road reported power cuts of several hours a day on Bunaken Island in a 2016 post, and a light is useful on village paths after dark either way.
- A dry bag. You will be sharing a working boat with cargo, so protect electronics and documents.
- Offline copies. The same post found phone reception and internet intermittent. Save your host's details, your return plan and your insurance documents before you leave Manado.
- Medicines. For health questions, including malaria, speak to your own doctor or national travel health service. Our Is Bunaken safe? page covers medical limits on the island.
How do homestays compare with dive resorts?
They differ most on what is arranged for you.
| Question | Village homestay | Dive resort |
|---|---|---|
| Bathroom | Typically shared, per The Indonesia Guide | Ask; varies by resort and room |
| Meals | Local food, per The Indonesia Guide | Most offer full-board packages, per Wikivoyage |
| Getting there | Public boat lands at the village, per Sulawesi.com | Wikivoyage says most resorts arrange airport transfers |
| Booking | Confirm directly; listings go out of date | Most take direct online bookings, per Wikivoyage |
| Diving | Arrange with a dive shop; ask the host | Usually the point of the stay; check what the package includes |
A homestay suits a traveller with time, flexibility and a small budget. It suits a short dive trip less well. Sulawesi.com makes a similar point about boats: because the public boat takes up half a day each way, it says a three-day trip may justify a resort transfer. On a tight schedule, the saving on the room can vanish into lost diving time.
How do you build a Bunaken daily budget?
Add it up by line rather than looking for one number. For a budget stay, list these:
- The room, and whether it includes meals. The guesthouse row in the price table gives one publisher's range.
- Food not covered by the room, and drinking water.
- The boat, both ways, divided by your nights on the island.
- The park fee, which may apply per day or per visit. See the Bunaken entrance fee page.
- Activities: snorkel hire, dives, ojek rides.
- A cash reserve in case a delayed boat adds a night.
What else do budget travellers ask?
Are there homestays on Bunaken Island?
Yes. The Indonesia Guide describes homestays in Bunaken village, and Sulawesi.com names Lorenso and Daniel's among them. Listings change, so confirm that a house is still operating before you travel.
Is Bunaken suitable for budget travellers?
It can be, if you accept basic rooms, shared bathrooms and a slow boat. The Indonesia Guide says stays start from family guesthouses, and the public boat is the low-cost crossing, though delays can eat into a short trip.
Are there budget accommodations in Bunaken?
Yes. Village homestays and guesthouses form the lower end, and Panorama Backpackers advertises budget rooms. The price table on this page shows one publisher's guesthouse range and that operator's listed starting rate.
How can I plan Bunaken on a tight budget?
Take the public boat, stay at least two nights so you get a full day, carry cash from Manado, and budget for bottled water and the park fee. Keep a spare night in reserve for boat delays.
Which prices are published?
Official fees and public third-party listings, each with its source and date. These are not our prices or offers. Fees and fares change, and sources sometimes disagree, so check the source before you rely on a figure.

How do I reach the desk?
Write to WhatsApp +62 811-3941-4563 or bd@juaraholding.com with your dates, how many people, and whether you want a homestay or something with more arranged for you. The desk answers with what it can find, but only a written offer binds anyone, and it would state the price and the contracting company. Requests through the desk can lead to a paid booking, so we have a commercial interest.
Send the desk your dates, group size, and dive level. The desk replies in writing.
